![]() ![]() As a result, those files are stored in locations all over the drive platters and the moving read/write head must travel the complete width of the platter to load files. ![]() Data can’t automatically migrate itself to the outer edges of the platters to fill in available space, so after many read/write cycles have been completed, there are gaps where large files cannot be written. New data is generally written to the outside of the platters, with the read/write heads moving in toward the center as more data is stored. HDDs use a magnetic read/write head to access rotating round platters that usually spin at either 5,400 or 7,200 revolutions per minute (see image above right). In this article, we’ll discuss why defragging Mac HDDs is usually unnecessary and how to do it if you’re one of the few users who may actually benefit from the process.ĭefragging is a slang term for “defragmentation”, which is the process of organizing files on a HDD to optimize how it accesses those files. Like all computers, Macs tend to slow down a bit after a few years of usage, and those readers who are new to the Mac might think that the old Windows solution of “defragging the hard disk drive” (HDD) might help. ![]() ![]() Macs are more popular than ever, thanks to a “halo effect” from buyers of iPhones and iPads who decide to make the switch from Windows to macOS. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Before you get rid of your old computer, whether that’s tossing it or selling it, it’s best practice to ensure all of that data has been securely erased from your drive so that it can’t be accessed by anyone else. Hackers looking to exploit data that provides access to passwords or your identity are particularly interested in getting their hands on this data. ![]() The computer’s drive will contain all of your emails, contacts, documents, and more-in other words, all of the sensitive data that you wouldn’t want to share with other people. Your computer and the external drives you may use store all of your personal data. But there are far less destructive ways to make sure your data is gone for good. Well, taking a sledgehammer or projectile weapon to your old machine is certainly one way to make the data irretrievable, and it can be enormously cathartic as long as you follow appropriate safety and disposal protocols. What do I do with a Mac that still has personal data on it? Do I take out the disk drive and smash it? Do I sweep it with a really strong magnet? Is there a difference in how I handle a hard drive (HDD) versus a solid-state drive (SSD)? ![]() ![]() ![]() There’s a good chance they might have, since the case fits the pattern of similar counterfeit coupon crimes that go back years. Zhang told police he “got the coupons from eBay, then said they were cut out from a magazine, and later said he got them from a friend”.īoth men were taken into custody, and investigators are now looking into whether they hit up any other local stores. The investigating officer reported finding more coupons in their pockets, and in their car. Police trailed the men as they left the store, and stopped them for a minor traffic violation. ![]() According to the incident report, a Walmart employee told police “she wasn’t sure if the coupons were valid” since they “looked different/smudged as if copied”. Investigators say the men were going through self-checkout with more than 100 cans of Enfamil powdered formula, and more than 100 coupons purportedly offering $10 off each can. 30-year-old Dejun Yan and 26-year-old Xu Zhang were nabbed Tuesday at a local Walmart. Police in Stuart, Florida are the latest to report the arrests of suspects trying to pass off fake baby formula coupons. How can anyone be sure about that? Because people keep getting arrested for it. The only problem is, that formula is likely either stolen, tampered with, or purchased with counterfeit coupons. So there’s a market for discounted formula at flea markets, in inner-city bodegas or on eBay. ![]() Baby formula is an expensive necessity for many new parents. ![]() |
